Sail training – Yachtmaster prep & exam

The Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore exam is about demonstrating polished seamanship and confident leadership. This prep week is designed to identify and close any gaps in your skillset, while sharpening and refining the advanced techniques required to skipper with authority. Across the week you’ll focus on:
- Navigation & pilotage – chart work, tidal planning, blind navigation, night sailing and pilotage
- Boat handling – close‑quarters manoeuvres, docking under sail and power, sail trim and balance
- Skipper skills – leadership, crew management, watchkeeping, provisioning, and decision‑making under pressure
- Safety & emergency drills – man overboard recovery (day and night), fire, flooding, abandon ship protocols
- Exam readiness – mock scenarios, coaching to RYA standards, targeted practice to polish weaker areas With small group ratios (typically 3:1), you’ll benefit from personalised coaching and plenty of hands‑on practice.
The week is structured to help you refine your seamanship and skipper skills in realistic scenarios, building confidence and readiness for the exam. Whether you’re booked in for assessment or simply want to raise your sailing to Yachtmaster level, this prep week offers the perfect opportunity to upskill, refine, and sail with confidence.
NOTE: Candidates wishing to take the YM coastal / offshore exam will need to ensure they meet the prerequisites and pay for the exam via the RYA portal ahead of meeting the examiner on day four.
